The nation is less than a month away from deciding whether to stay the course, or cut and run. Democrats are giddy about retaking the House of Representatives, and, some predict, even the Senate. National polls support the Democrats' optimism and deliver a sobering slap-in-the-face to Republicans.
The possibility that the Democrats could reclaim the majority in Congress should be a sobering reality for every American. The consequences will be dramatic, not only in foreign policy, but for the economy, and for domestic policy as well.
In the absence of a coherent alternative, the Democrats seem to fall in line behind John Murtha's idea of pulling U.S. troops back "over the horizon" and letting the Iraqis fight their own battles - unless they begin to fail - in which case, the U.S. troops would be sent in to save the day. A Democratic Congress could not force the Commander-in-Chief to employ this tactic, but the Democrats could make it even harder for the President to conduct the war by demanding hearings and conducting endless "investigations."
The same Democrat leadership that condemned the President for his unilateral "cowboy" approach to foreign policy, now condemns him for refusing unilateral talks with Iran and North Korea. Instead, he's relying on the international community to exert collective influence on these two rogue nations, in an effort to give diplomacy every opportunity to prevent conflict.
The question is, should the Democrats be in control when push comes to shove, what will America do? Push will come to shove, sooner or later. Iran will not give up its quest to join the nuclear club, and North Korea will not relent from its national idiocy.
Today's Democrats are not the Democrats of the Harry Truman era. They are the Democrats of George Soros, of Michael Moore, of Howard Dean, of Nancy Pelosi, of John Kerry, of Ted Kennedy, and of Hillary Clinton. These are the Democrat leaders who championed Bill Clinton's cut-and-run from Somalia, when warlords shot down a Blackhawk helicopter and dragged American soldiers through the streets. These are the Democrat leaders who applauded the appeasement of Kim Jong-il when Clinton's envoy, Jimmy Carter, gave nuclear reactors to North Korea. These are the Democrat leaders who prefer to look the other way, and pretend that things are getting better - rather than making the hard decisions required to make things better.
These are the same Democrat leaders who continually complain about the horrible economic situation caused by Bush's "tax cuts for the rich." They vow to "undo" the economic structure that has produced a record stock market, near-record employment rates, near-record federal revenues, and faster than expected deficit reductions. These gains have been made in the face of unprecedented demand for funding to recover from 9-11, a three-year war, and catastrophic disaster relief from Katrina.
These are the same Democrat leaders who are staunch believers in the Karl Marx idea that government must take ""From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs." Every chance they get, Democrats systematically penalize success, and reward failure through their tax redistribution policies. Democrats have already announced that every Bush tax cut will be on the table when they take control of Congress. Every new redistribution program brings with it a new federal bureaucracy, that requires excessive administrative cost and swells government even more.
These are the same Democrat leaders who prefer to control human behavior through regulations, rather than to allow individuals to freely explore their own potential. The idea of private property is obsolete, and carries no weight against the need for government to protect a yellow-bellied beetle - if an environmental group says it is endangered. A man's home is his castle - unless government decides his castle would produce more revenue if given to another private - sustainable - developer.
These are the same Democrat leaders who implemented Bill Clinton's Sustainable Development policies which abolish the idea that a person may use his private property as he wishes. All land use must fit into a government-approved comprehensive land use plan. Communities can no longer grow as determined by local markets, conditions and officials. Communities must be "sustainable," as determined by government.
Life in America under the control of the new Democrat leadership is, indeed, a sobering thought. The super-hyped flap about Mark Foley's perversions is inconsequential, compared to the deluge of perversions a Democrat majority is eager to impose on this nation.
The Democrat party is driven by people who do not remember Harry Truman. Those who do - Democrats, Republicans, and everyone in between - know that there comes a time when decisive action is required. That time is November 7, 2006.
